General Overview

Pamukkale is an extraordinary natural wonder of Turkey. The nature and history make this magical place unique in the World. Fascinating limestone Formations have been built up by the hot spring waters flowing down from White terracess. Travertines have a height of 100 meters and a length of 2600 meters. The plateau owes its formations to spring pools. The spring water has a temperature of 35 C and is heavily carbonated and calcareous. When the thermal waters emerge from the springs and the pressure is suddenly the carbon dioxide with which the water is heavily charged tends to vapourise and the calcium carbonate is precipated, gradually forming the fascinating travertine formations that now constitue the distinctive feautures of the site. The hot springs have been used since Roman times for their therapeutic powers. Both the thermal center with its motels and thermal pools, and the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis, are situated on the same plateau. İn the 3rd century B.C the whole region belonged to the Seleucidian kings of Syria. After the battle of Magnesia the entire territory was captured by the kingdom of pergamum. in 190 B.C. Probably the city was founded by king eumenes ıı. It was called Hierapolis after Hiera, the wife of Telephos, the legandary founder of pergamum. Later on, the city fell into the hands of the Romans. The ruins visited today belong to the Roman period. The city was given its present appearance after the terrible earthquake of 60 A.D during the time of Nero. The apostle Philip came here with his doughter, dying as a martyr in 80 A.D. Then Hierapolis became the bishop’s residence. DON’T MİSS THİS BEAUTİFUL EXCURSİON
